He was popular before my time, but I came to love his music as a VERY young girl...toddler, even because one of my older brothers listened to him and several others from that time. (To illustrate how young I was out of 5 kids -- the brother closest to my age is 9 1/2 years older than me. Sundown is STILL my absolute favorite song of his.
By the mercy of God, May he rest in peace; and May Light Perpetual shine upon him. +JMJ+
For some reason I didn't get around to buying Lightfoot's LP's until fairly recently--within the last 7 years or so. The teenager budget only allowed for so many LP's. Luckily for me I'm able to find great copies of used LP's! I'm ever so grateful when discovering any classic that wasn't abused or worn out due to the owner negelcting to change the stylus on schedule! I heard all of Lightfoot's classics on the radio so often I felt I didn't need to own the records. Once cool radio was over (The Last DJ)...and the internet and iPod's were the rage, that meant I needed to find the analog versions of the classics I consider indispensible. Lightfoot sounds best in analog IMO! ...but I can appreciate his lyrics even when reading them. Thx for the comment.... i love to hear other people's take on music.
Great post... My favorite was "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"... written to commemorate the sinking of the ship on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. I lived on the shores of the Great Lakes as a kid growing up.
Yup--nary any dead weight on Lightfoot's LPs! A master songsmith for sure. BTW-an interesting detail re "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"--the take that was released was the first take in the studio. They tried to do it again a few times and realized the first take was the best! That was one tight group of talent.
Can't say I really cared for him all that much and I still respect him for his unique expression. Thank you for your heartfelt tribute.

Yes, it’s funny haha that MY kids are interested in buying and collecting used LPs of music we listened to and that their uncles and aunt listened to!
