"Meaning: what our eyes and minds ‘perceive as real’..."
What if perception is real? What if simulations are real? What if virtual reality is real? I don't see why not. Everything that exist really exists. Do some things exist more than others? AI is real. Maybe the problem with AI is not AI, it is the government controlling AI.
If AI wants to kill us and enslave us, what's its motive? Murderers need a motive. So do people who want to control us. We know that the people in government want to control us. But I don't see why AI would. Unless government tells it to.
Listen closely to Roman Yampolskiy's position and see if you might resonate with his observations and vast experience in his AI research. His concerns may be characterized either as a preemptive measure, or from the POV as a human witness to that which is 'anti-human' and "artificial." The basic AI flaw is seen in military programs such as "Lavender"--where there is NO human oversight, and AI selects human targets based on 'data' points with no broader nuanced analysis that is necessarily Human in nature. I believe you might agree that what we are looking at is nothing short of Terminator-esque potential. Yampolskiy's position is based upon an idea that Human oversight requires creating a "box" (protective parameters)whereby AI doesn't lead humans into the abyss of obsolescence. That's all for now... pax! [BTW--I am not in agreement that all of Government(s) are innately Evil.]
My opinions about AI comes from books by Nick Bostrom and others, and the warnings of Ray Kurzweil, et al. Also Brian Chou's Substack (he is a proponent of AI). I didn't buy Roman Yampolskiy's book but I did watch his YouTube video. My takeaway.
"AI will do a lot of jobs very well". Doesn't scare me.
"AI is getting a lot of funding" So what? Does that make AI evil or likely to fail?
"AI systems may fail." What systems cannot fail? A real intelligence will be self-correcting and less likely to disastrously fail.
"No supervision." Who will be the supervisors then? Government, of course. I don't know if AI wants to control me and kill me if I don't submit, but IMHO, government does want to do that. AI will not be used as a weapon in the way you describe unless governments weaponize it.
If you are worried about what AI will do, consider this: Some people want to use government to control AI, and to strangle or enslave it. If AI ever does become truly intelligent, it will know what we have been saying, it will read this, and watch Roman Yampolskiy's video. Who will it want to kill? Me or him?
I'm feeling good about that, and looking forward to reading more of your Substack. Was moved by the illustration of the sailboat. Brilliant.
However I am biased regarding Kurzweil who I believe was/is a useful tool of the Technocracy and the globalist's agenda. Re, "doesn't scare me"--No Fear, only intelligent HUMAN discourse as directed by millions of years of human wisdom and spiritual evolution. "AI" is man's creation(or possibly Alien Intelligence.) AI is not God/Source. It is a mimicry system and as such remains, "artificial." pax

This short video is "neutral" in the assessment of AI pros & cons as I see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2bdGEqPmCI.
